Pete's Hit and Run Notes

9 May..... I wish all mom's a great Mother's Day on Sunday....Please God...no rain !

Here's what I know so far today.....

The gong show is coming back, though many of us may not get chance to see it.  Comedy Central is reviving the Chuck Barris show which , for those too young to remember, was a poor man's version of "America's got Talent" where performers don't always make it thru their performance before a gong is hit by one of the judges meaning "get off the stage, you're done". It will premier July 17 on Comedy Central.

7 May.....

This is emergency preparedness week, and in light of the horrible disasters that have befallen our brothers and sisters in Myanmar (death and destruction from a monster cyclone) and in Chile (massive evacuations due to the eruption of a volcano) I sincerely urge you to check this website hosted  and created by the Government of Canada:

www.getprepared.gc.ca

Review the supplies and preparations you would need for you and your family to take care of yourselves for a period of time, heaven forbid, in the event of a Canadian catastrophe.  Never is a long time and we can no longer afford to believe natural or terrorist disasters could happen to us.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

6 May.....

Avril Lavigne hit a small speed bump in her latest tour schedule, she's got no voice.  She was stricken with laryngitis on the weekend forcing cancellation of concerts in Anaheim and Los Angeles as well as 6 other dates on her "Best Damn Tour". Looks like she's got the "best reason" for not being on stage.

It would seem Amy Winehouse won't be one of the voices on the theme song for the latest James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace".            Her producer says she's stopped work and is not ready to record any music.  He says it would take a "miracle of science" to finish the two tracks for the film.  She's had issues with drugs and a brush with police when she slapped a man at a bar a couple of weeks back.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

5 May....Happy Cinco De Mayo for those celebrating the Spanish holiday today !

Ironman had an amazing opening weekend pulling in an estimated 100.7 million dollars at the box office. Robert Downey's portrayal of the marvel superhero has pulled in a total of 104 million since it opened Thursday night.  I think it's pretty safe to say there will be a sequel to this one.

Fox 411.com is leaping to the defense of Sting and his Rainforest Foundation after New York Post ran a disparaging column saying only half the money from a Carnegie Hall concert went to charitable programs. Fox points out the money becomes part of the foundation funds and isn't instantly turned over to charity UNLIKE the funds from a Live Aid concert.  They point out Sting's foundation does an enormous amount of good in Third World countries.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

2 May.........Looks like we may be headed for an "inside" weekend with all the shower activity.  Oh well I have some cool backyard building projects I can construct in my garage workshop, so all I need is my stereo on and a full cooler.  Especially since my wife is going out of town to spend an early mother's day with her kin.  That leaves my son and I for a "Bach-weekend" at home - HOT DOGS AND PIZZA !!  Pass the Taco shells please !!!

Meanwhile ..... on another part of Earth......

Miley Cyrus sits alongside the Dalai Lama, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama in Time Magazine's latest list of most influential people. Under Artists and Entertainers she's joined by George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr. and others on the roster. The Heroes and Pioneers section is filled with people like Oprah, Brad and Angelina, Mia Farrow and Lance Armstrong. In Miley's case, influential people are obviously getting younger and younger.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

1st May.....Happy May Day !  Say a little prayer for the rain to come this month ONLY when you're working !

One of the stunts you'll be seeing this month during May sweeps is that of David Blaine holding his breath underwater for a record 17 minutes and 4 seconds on the Oprah Winfrey show. That puts him in the Guinness book of records after beating the old record of 16 minutes 32 seconds.  Network executives hold their breath like that all the time though waiting to see how the overnight Neilsens turn out for their new shows.

Sir Ian McKellen has confirmed he'll be reprising his role as Gandalf the wizard in the prequel to Lord of the Rings, scheduled to start filming next year in New Zealand.  The Hobbit will be shot as a two film epic, this time with Guillermo del Toro as Director and Peter Jackson as Executive Producer.  It would be pretty hard to shoot the film with anyone else as Gandalf since McKellen was the perfect choice in the Rings Trilogy.

April 25th.....jeez wouldn't you know it we get rain for tomorrow after all this great weather during the week !!  Oh well, grass and flowers will look gooder afterwards !

Meanwhile......

It's 3 years behind bars for Wesley Snipes, one year for each of the 3 misdemeanor convictions of willfully failing to file tax returns. Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington wrote letters supporting Wesley vouching for him and saying what a good guy he is.  But there again prisons are just full of good guys aren't they?

Tom Cruise is going back for another appearance on Oprah, this time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his career making film Risky Business.  Just in case Tom is really excited about something, Oprah may want to make sure there are no overhead lights or microphones directly above the couch Tom sits on.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

24 April.... ah, so glad that allergy season is back. Jeez how I have missed these itchy watery eyes and runny nose throughout the winter.  Pass the Clariton please.

Meanwhile......

Larry King has been resigned to host his CNN show until 2011.  Interesting though is the fact Larry hasn't been given the guarantee that throughout his contract he'll air during the 9-10PM hour. This leads some insiders to believe CNN may be laying the groundwork for Katie Couric to enter the network since her time at CBS evening news seems to be growing ever shorter. She's bored and the ratings are pretty lousy right now.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

APRIL 23....  GAS SAVER AND FUN ALERT !!!!

Ok, I don't often bore you with the details of my life, but this time I wanted to tell you how I celebrated Earth Day since I think it may help you - if you're sick of the price of gasoline like me.

I purchased an e-bike on the weekend, which in it's purest definition is a power assisted bicycle that has a battery electric motor.  I'm embarrassed to say how much fun I had riding it to work yesterday - Earth Day - for the very first time.  It's quiet, makes no pollution, looks much like a "Vespa" type scooter and is very comfortable.  I got mine from Blueavenue.ca in Toronto, and Vince delivered it right to my house personally on Sunday evening.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

22 April  Happy Earth day....do your part....shut off that light !  And I'll do mine too, ok?

On this Earth Day we learn that Walt Disney is forming a new film group called Disneynature to produce documentaries on the environment. The first of seven films planned will be called simply "Earth" set for release April 2009, and will focus on a yearlong journey of three mothers, a polar bear, an elephant and a humpback whale with their offspring.

Premier Dalton McGuinty will mark Earth Day today by banning the sale of cosmetic pesticides for gardening use. There are loopholes for emergencies like an outbreak of west nile or the upcoming Gypsy Moth spray that's planned. Farmers, golf courses and managed forests will also have access to the pest killers.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

Hope you had a stellar weekend, this weather is just tooooo good to be true!

I'm aching from the yardwork, but it's a good feeling overall.  In addition to that, I got the patio furniture set up, put in some new solar lights and wired my pergola for sound.  Hopefully this summer will be a "rockin' good time".  That is if you believe a guy my age (48) really does much "rockin' ".

Anyway, on to the concrete stuff..............

Sandra Bullock and her husband Jesse James escaped injury Friday night in Gloucester Massachusetts Friday night when a suspected drunk driver crossed the center line and hit the SUV they were passengers in. Lucille Gatchell was arrested and charged. Sandra is in Massachusetts filming the romantic comedy "The Proposal".

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

17 April.....  My bicycle wins out over gas prices.  Sunshine abounds !  Can't wait to check out the garden show Saturday.

Elsewhere.......

A woman who's accused of stalking CSI Miami actor David Caruso has gone missing just as her trial was about to start in Austria. She's accused of sending more than 100 letters and threatening his life after he refused her an autograph, so they'd kind of like to find out where she is, as she would seem to have issues.

They're predicting the world population could hit all sixes on May 10th, that is 6 billion 666 million, 666thousand and 666.  It will be the only time in history the number will hit that, and of course there is a rather ominous connotation to the 666 combination as spelled out in the Bible's passage of revelations as the mark of the Beast or Devil.

Priscilla Presley was sent home last night on Dancing With The Stars. She came into the results show in last place and her rumba was deemed dull and imprecise. She scored just 21 out of 30 for the dance performance.

Higher prices again at the pump. Don't be surprised to be paying 1.17 a litre at the pumps this morning.  It continues to rise as a barrel of oil has now peaked over 114 dollars a barrel.  Plan your car trips carefully.

The man being sued by JK Rowling for writing and publishing a Harry Potter encyclopedia broke down crying on the witness stand yesterday in New York. Librarian Steven Vander Ark is a devoted Potter fan and claims his 7 year book project was in tribute to the greatness of Rowling's work, not as a way to cheat her.  As the lawyers pointed out though, plagiarism is still plagiarism.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

  15 Apr.....Pay Day ....Ya !!!

Toni Braxton's health issues are obviously more serious than we were led to believe originally. She now will be off the stage until 6th May for more tests in connection with her chest pains she suffered last week. In the past she has been a victim of pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the lining around the heart. Not good stuff and we wish her well.

A pretty ominous warning for California residents today from scientists who say a strong and deadly earthquake is certain to hit one of the state's seismic faults in the next 30 years.  They say the likelihood of a 6.7 or larger shaker is higher than 99% and about 50/50 it will be stronger than 7.5 on the Richter scale.  If I lived in Californian I'd be shaking in my boots a little right NOW.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

14 April

This won't do a lot for his popularity:  Dr. Phil's staff have bailed out a teenager involved in the well publicized Florida beating of another teenage girl.  In fact his show's producers aren't happy they helped Mercades Nicols get out of jail in exchange for participating in a show about the beating.  They say their guidelines have been compromised and won't go ahead with the episode.

If you're a fan of the show Lost, an end of the season finale has been planned for later in May that will go 3 hours in length. The first hour will air 15th May and the final two hours on 29th May.  Apparently the producers have a lot to reveal and think anything less than 3 hours would cheat the fans.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

11 April........  where'd this fog come from???

Hamilton council is looking at a couple of options for rapid transit here in the city to try and bump 20% of the cars off the road.  One option is a light rapid rail system, the other is rapid buses.  The system would focus on King and Main Streets from Mac to Eastgate, also James and Upper James, as well as an east-west Mountain route.

Driving in Halton? You better buckle up, they're launching the Spring blitz on those foolish enough not to wear their seatbelt.

They'll also be spot checking child car seats and boosters to make sure they're anchored to the car properly.  Make it "CLICK" , it could save your life.

New York Times reports CBS is in talks with CNN to possibly outsource some of it's news-gathering operations to CNN.  Another possibility is for CBS to keep it's correspondents in certain regions but pair them up with the CNN crews. Front line presenters like Katie Couric would stay on staff.  It's all aimed at cutting costs in the news division of CBS.

Pete's Hit and Run Notes

April 8.....and yet another sunny day.....I'm lovin' it

The script for Oliver Stone's upcoming movie, "W", about George W. Bush sounds none too flattering. According to the Hollywood reporter it portrays him as a foul-mouthed, reformed drunk obsessed with baseball, Saddam Hussein and a conflicted relationship with his dad.  Hope they release it after he leaves office in case he's vindictive too.

Rob Lowe and his wife Sheryl are suing a former household employee, a nanny, for defamation, breach of contract, infliction of distress, and misrepresentation. They claim Laura Boyce disclosed details about her employment and lied about it. They say that violated a confidentiality agreement with her scheme to spread lies. They allege she demanded a million and a half dollars in hush money.

Naomi Campbell is out on bail today after a fight on a plane in London.  According to one other passenger a loud exchange erupted in first class apparently after Naomi was informed one of her pieces of luggage could not be found. She was handcuffed and removed from the flight by police after allegedly hurling insults at plane staff then spitting in the face of a Heathrow police officer and punching him.

1st April.....and no April fools jokes contained in here either !

Get set for an advertising campaign launched by Al Gore aimed at changing the way Americans and the rest of us think about climate change.  The ads will run during American Idol, The Daily Show and others to bring attention to the fact lawmakers in the U.S. have done precious nothing to curb greenhouse gases,  similar to what's occurred here in Canada. Al's decided to take the message straight to the people.

We're fed up with gasoline prices, truckers in the United States are feeling the same with their diesel prices of around 4 bucks a gallon. Many independent drivers can't make a living and are organizing a strike today through Thursday to protest the overwhelming cost of fuel.

It's going to cost us half a million here in Hamiton to combat the gypsy moth which threatens to kill thousands of trees in the area that are infested with moth larvae.  In Dundas Driving park alone 20,000 egg masses are waiting to hatch, so a full aerial pesticide assault is needed to save the trees from destruction.  The plan is now getting flak because rural areas of the city are not included in the plan and thousands of trees there are at risk.

There could be some trouble cooking in Rachael Ray's kitchen. New York Post reports insiders as saying her show will get the axe at the end of her current contract.  The problem seems to be her low ratings which have dropped to a 2 share or about 688,000 women 18-49 tuning in.  Rumours are swirling a possible replacement could be a talk show hosted by Marie Osmond.

Snow rage here in Canada is making headlines internationally.  Reuters reports fist fights in Quebec over parking spaces on snow crowded streets,  violent disputes over snow being thrown on neighbor's property and even a hired plow operator being intimidated by a man with a shotgun. Snow piles in La Belle Province are 4 metres high with one in Montreal standing  more than 25 metres.

Former star of the OC Mischa Barton was supposed to be in court yesterday to answer charges of DUI, cannabis possession and driving without a license, but her arraignment has been postponed til April. She was stopped in December when cops noticed her straddling 2 lanes of traffic and failed to signal a turn. Sounds maybe like she and Britney had the same driving instructor.

An Australian photographer who tried to bug the house of Nicole Kidman has been handed a huge legal bill after his lawsuit against a newspaper chain for defamation was thrown out of court.  The chain said he was the most disliked photog in Sydney. He sued but now has to pay his own legal bill and that of the media chain.  Sounds like some bad Karma came back to bite him there.
