The "Walk of Life for Cardiac Rehabilitaton", is a national fundraising event hosted by cardiac rehabilitation programs throughout Canada, and supported by the Canadian Cardiac Rehabilitation Foundation (CCRF). This year, the MacTurtle Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and the MacSenior Exercise and Wellness Program are hosting the 9th annual Walk-A-Thon. The event will consist of a 5 km walk around the beautiful McMaster University campus followed by refreshments and door prizes!

5th Annual Lunch Money Tuesday

Volunteers will ask commuters to share their lunch money for that day in order to support the collection and delivery of surplus fresh food throughout Halton Region. This event is also intended to raise awareness about hunger in this Region and to encourage individuals to take action to reduce hunger.

Takes place a various GO Stations: OAKVILLE, BRONTE, APPLEBY, BURLINGTON, ALDERSHOT, MILTON AND GEORGETOWN

In operation since 1995, Food for Life is a food recovery program. Seven days a week they collect surplus perishable food (baked goods, fruit and vegetables, prepared foods, dairy and meat, bulk food) from grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants and the corporate food sector in Halton Region. They deliver this food at no cost, quickly and safely, to over 50 community social service organizations throughout the region and over 45 outreach programs which they have established in low-income neighbourhoods in Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Acton and Georgetown. Last year, Food for Life delivered over 1.2 million pounds of food and helped feed over 17,000 people every month. Much more background is available on their website www.foodforlife.ca

This National Fundraising Event will engage teams of 4 participants in a journey (walking/running) around the Downtown Hamilton community using clues to find checkpoints and complete fun, skilled based challenges. Lil’ Tikes on Trikes - Ages 2–5
This ride is geared to children on tricycles and training wheels.

Wonders on Wheels - Ages 6-10
This ride along Bayfront Park’s Waterfront trail is geared to children who have mastered two wheels and can navigate a path without assistance.

Trailblazers - All Ages 5 km Walk
Children and adults of all ages are welcome to walk up to 5 km.

A registration fee of $25 is required for those aged 18 and over; there is no fee for those aged 17 years and under. Registration is free when you fundraise $50 or more.

Wednesday, June 5th is Tim Hortons Camp Day! Camp Day is the one day each year when every penny from coffee sales at Tim Hortons Restaurants is donated to the Tim Horton Children's Foundation.

On Camp Day, when guests buy a coffee and participate in various fundraising activities, they will help send more than 14,000 kids on the camping adventure of a lifetime. Campers aged nine to 12 years attend a 10-day summer camp session or a seven-day winter camp session, at one of the Foundation's six camps in Canada and the United States. Children are selected by Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners who work closely with local youth organizations and schools to identify kids who would most benefit from an experience at camp.

During their time at camp, kids participate in a wide range of first-class programs and activities designed to build self-esteem and leadership skills. The Foundation is committed to providing an enriched and memorable experience for campers, giving them confidence in their abilities, pride in their accomplishments and a more positive view of the world and their place in it.

The Tim Horton Children's Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1974. As the Friends of HMCS HAIDA is a Charity and they cordially invite you to join their Veterans and guests in a celebration to support this unique ship celebrating "70 years of HMCS HAIDA Service" and "60th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice".

The Friends of HMCS HAIDA show and share the enduring story of Canada's Navy and her contribution to the freedoms we presently enjoy. HMCS HAIDA is the last of 27 Tribal class destroyers who were the greyhounds of the seas in our darkest hour. Today she is one of only two Canadian warships remaining from when Canada had the third largest Navy in the world.

HMCS HAIDA is moored in Hamilton harbour as a National Historic Site of Parks Canada. Veteran members tell their story as Canada's ‘fightingest’ ship and their education programme takes the life history of thousands of Canadian sailors into schools and educational establishments. They are struggling to capture the stories of their veterans before they irreplaceably pass away. HMCS HAIDA has such wonderful stories stretching from 1943, through the cold Atlantic convoys; D-Day; Korea and the Cold War. She is an irreplaceable part of Canada’s naval and maritime history, recognized as such by the Canadian Historic Sites and Monuments Board.

Please arrive early (before 4:30) to enjoy the CWHM exhibit, museum entrance included!

Gutsy Walk

Gutsy Walk is the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada’s (CCFC’s) most energetic and fun fundraising event. On June 9, 2013, thousands of Canadians at almost 70 locations across the country will walk together to raise money to find a cure for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is made up of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

CCFC-funded IBD research has confirmed what we have suspected for years – Canada has one of the highest rates for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis in the world and those rates are increasing. In fact, one in 150 Canadians is living with IBD. The Gutsy Walk is a great way to spread awareness of IBD and raise much-needed funds to support essential research.

Gutsy Walk participants who raise $1,000 or more automatically become members in the Top Pledge Earners Club for the year. In 2012, 743 individuals were gutsy fundraisers each raising the $1000 minimum, with an overall average of $2246.

Since 2010, Saving 2nd Base has been working with people around the community to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. This fundraiser has been made possible because of the support of companies and people willing to help out! By participating in this tournament your team is already making a difference!

All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation through the CIBC Run for the Cure. The money raised through the CIBC Run for the Cure will be directed towards meaningful research, education and awareness programs.

Should you decide to donate, you will help fund the most promising research and give hope to women and their families living with breast cancer. Any money raised in the community stays in the community – they are helping families right here at home.

The Third Annual Saving 2nd Base Tournament will be held at Turner Park in Hamilton on July 13 & 14, 2013. This year’s tournament will consist of 20 teams and each team is guaranteed 3 regular games and at least 1 game in the playoffs. There will be two brackets in this year’s playoffs: 1) Champions and 2) Consolation.

The team who wins first place in the Champions bracket will win Saving 2nd Base medallions and t-shirts while the team who wins first place in the Consolation bracket will win Saving 2nd Base t-shirts!

Don’t forget – even if you’re not playing in this year’s tournament, they would love to have you come and support them! There will be raffle prizes, cold drinks and hot food. So, come out and help raise money for a great cause, while sitting in the sun and having some fun!

This will be an opportunity to see the three final designs and learn about the alteration in the final design. There will also be story boards on the history of the Maple Leaf as an emblem in Canada along with the history and words of the song “Maple Leaf Forever”.

Five Ontario women will be attempting a never-done-before and record-setting feat by swimming Lake Ontario from Kingston to Burlington in the form of a continuous relay. They are swimming between July 23rd - July 28th, 2013 in support of "Because I Am A Girl" initiative.

The swim will commence in Kingston ON with the destination landing of Spencer Smith Park in Burlington ON. The distance of this feat is 305.2 km. The 5 women are expecting to complete this swim in 5 days, swimming continuously in a relay format.

Plan International's Because I Am A Girl initiative is a social movement to unleash the power of girls and women to claim a brighter future for girls in the developing world. When a girl is educated, nourished and protected, she shares her knowledge and skills with her family and community, and can forever change the future of a nation. It's that powerful.
It only takes ONE girl to change the course of history and they have FIVE!

Come out and enjoy a performance from The Steady Rebels! The band was formed in the fall of 2011 after drummer Damian and guitarist/vocalist Sean discussed the idea of starting a reggae influenced band. Damian contacted some friends from his college years and recruited a bass player, keyboard player and saxophone player. Although due to complications with these members, the band had to make some changes in the lineup and eventually recruited Lisa on trumpet, Mike on bass, and a long time friend of Sean's and Damian's, Ryan on percussion. The band has been through a lot together and seen a lot of ups and downs but they have grown together and are close like family now.

Come out and enjoy a performance from Collette Andrea! Collette Andrea was born in Brampton Ontario and has grown up in and around the GTA. Currently living in Toronto, along with being a musician she is a full time Social Work student at Ryerson University. Collette started out playing bass guitar when she was 12, along the way learning drums and guitar. She has been actively writing music since the age of 14, exlporing blues, rock, indie, and grunge music genres. Her influences range from a variety of artist and genres such as Feist, Cat Power, Etta James, Smashing Pumpkins, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Bessie Smith, The Rolling Stones, The Guess Who, John Lennon, and Neil Young. Over a year ago, Collette finally began recording with HannahKin Studio, releasing singles and music videos. After playing in several bands, Collette is now pursuing a solo music career, gigging and performing in and around the Toronto area.

Every year on the Friday after Labour Day (Welcome Week), 300 first year engineers and another 100 “Redsuits” (ahem, that is, Welcome Week Representatives) hit the streets of downtown Hamilton armed with… well, 100 feet of heavy-duty rope and one giant, “accordion-style” HSR city bus. They tie the ropes to the bus, the driver throws her into neutral (though they usually like to ride the brake, grrrr…), then they line up in front and start pulling! The first-ever Bus Pull was held in 1985, and they’ve been going strong ever since!

You’d think with all those people it would be easy, but a bus weighs a LOT! Their traditional route starts at City Hall, moves up Main St. to Wellington, crosses to King St, then heads back to stop at Copps Colliseum, all through the late summer’s heat. The city cooperates every year to provide police escorts and lane closures; the mayor even visits before they head out!

What the heck do they do this for? Charity, of course! This is Mac Eng’s contribution to McMaster’s Shinerama campaign, raising money for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF). Carrying donation boxes, they approach passers-by and drivers of stopped cars to ask for donations to the CCFF.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal disease among young Canadians that affects the lungs and airways of individuals. Approximately 60% of patients in Canada are diagnosed with CF in the first year of life, and 90% by 10 years of age. A cure has yet to be found for this life-threatening disease.

As they pull the bus, they chant “We’re pulling a bus to fight CF!” and “Give us your money, this bus is heavy!” (whoever came up with that clever rhyme is a genius.) On top of the spare change donations, members of the team hit the Hamilton shops ahead of time seeking donations from stores. Spare change donations in 2005 topped $1000! They are very proud to be able to contribute to such an important foundation, and they LOVE TO PULL THAT BUS!!
