Tenor saxophonist David Schnitter's fourth and final LP in his string of Muse releases would serve as a perfect introduction to his playing, except that it is out of print. The hard bop stylist is heard teamed with trumpeter
Claudio Roditi, pianist
Albert Dailey, bassist
Mark Helias, and drummer
Ed Blackwell. Despite the presence of the more adventurous
Helias and
Blackwell, the treatments of four veteran standards (including "Where or When" and "I'll Remember April"), plus
Schnitter's "Ellipsis," is conventional and hard-swinging. The brief "If I Loved You," which has a vocal by
Schnitter in which he is joined by a completely different five-piece rhythm section, is a leftover track from the previous 1978 album
Thundering. All in all, this is an enjoyable set of modern, straight-ahead music.
