Album Review

Ron Trent has always acted older than his years. At the age of 14, the Chicago-raised DJ/producer recorded the techno masterpiece Altered States in his bedroom. By the time he was 26, Trent was living in New York, DJing the weekly party for Giantstep Records, and playing an organic house sound that easily rivals that of his much older contemporaries. This CD captures the smooth, soulful house that Trent now makes his area of expertise. It is rich in Afro percussion and late-night whispered vocals. Never making any over the top moves, you won't find one thumping kick or wailing diva. Instead, Trent seeks to match, not increase, the dancers' heartbeats. That being the case, this disc is highly suited for relaxing at home amidst the smell of incense. The mixing is as smooth as the heads on the bongos that slowly pulsate under every beat. You can almost visualize Trent effortlessly turning the knobs on the rotary mixer, an old-school piece of equipment shunned by most young guns.
