Chuck Hedges' recorded debut as a leader is actually a jam session date that co-stars fellow clarinetist
Allan Vaché. Joined by a swinging rhythm section then employed by
Jim Cullum's Happy Jazz Band (pianist
John Sheridan,
Howard Elkins on guitar and banjo, bassist
Jack Wyatt, and drummer Jim Vaughn),
Hedges and
Vaché battle it out on five extended standards. Considering that they had never played together before this concert, it is remarkable how exciting (and perfectly coherent) the music is, particularly the interplay between the two clarinetists. Such tunes as "Undecided," "China Boy," and "Memories of You" prove to be excellent vehicles for the talented players on this worthy CD.
