Album Review

Rootsy, soulful singer/songwriter Edwin McCain’s first career retrospective collects 15 of the artist’s most notable works, along with a new track, the Don Was-produced “Walk with You.” McCain, who grew up in South Carolina on a steady diet of soul and R&B, hit the pop jackpot in the early 2000s with two of the most requested wedding songs of the decade, “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask for More,” and can croon like a juke joint legend, which makes even his soppiest moments ring true. That said, The Best of Edwin McCain isn’t just an epic collection of make-out jams. His penchant for upbeat, day-driving slices of small town Americana are evident as well, resulting in a solid collection of AOR rock and soul that will help you get the girl, the truck, and the house back without even breaking a sweat.
