This CD is a bit different than Connie Crothers
' usual recordings. The improvisations by her quartet (with co-leader tenor saxophonist Lenny Popkin
, bassist Cameron Brown
, and drummer Carol Tristano
) are mostly not based on the chord changes of standards, the individual performances are generally fairly brief (only three exceed four minutes), and the playing is quite advanced, almost avant-garde. As usual, the musicians listen closely to each other and Crothers
make for a compatible team, but this rather brief set is less appealing than normal and few of the cuts are particularly memorable. Worth picking up but not essential.
