This CD is a bit different than
Connie Crothers' usual recordings. The improvisations by her quartet (with co-leader tenor saxophonist
Lenny Popkin, bassist
Cameron Brown, and drummer
Carol Tristano) are mostly not based on the chord changes of standards, the individual performances are generally fairly brief (only three exceed four minutes), and the playing is quite advanced, almost avant-garde. As usual, the musicians listen closely to each other and
Crothers and
Popkin make for a compatible team, but this rather brief set is less appealing than normal and few of the cuts are particularly memorable. Worth picking up but not essential.
