On this solo piano date,
Connie Crothers sometimes hints at her teacher,
Lennie Tristano (and includes his "Wow" in her repertoire), but primarily sounds like herself. She tends to use the melodies of the songs as the basis of her improvisations rather than the chords. So, usually even in her most free flights (unless it is a totally free improvisation) one can hear the themes. On this date she performs a few standards, a couple of originals based on standards, and freer material. The interpretations are generally relaxed, with her left hand often playing rhythmic basslines, although some of the music is taken out of tempo. In general,
Crothers' solo recital holds one's interest and contains its share of surprises.
